The Women’s Campaign Logo Explained
The Women’s Campaign is an autonomous campaign and we wanted to develop a campaign logo that is eye catching and memorable. It also had to be more than the typical ‘females symbol’, of the cross with the circle on top.
The Owl and the Olive leaf symbol have been taken from the images we see of the greek goddess Athena. Athena is one of the strongest images we see of female strength and she was deemed a champion of justice and civil law. It is also said to be thanks to Athena that the women of Athens secured the vote.
What is also important about Athena is that she did not divide the genders. She stood by and fought for both men and women. She was more than just a battle maiden, she also stood as a patroness for domestic arts.
Athena is frequently depicted as holding an owl in her outstretched hand, (she herself as often described as being ‘owl eyed’ in appearance.); hence why the owl is considered a symbol of Athena and indeed the many aspects of femininity.

Its appalling that even in this day and age and after all these years, that women in work are NOT treated equally. Many times women are asked to perform duties on an equal footing with men and probably have far more to lose. Most women these days have children, a home to look after and hold down a job. Why then are men paid far more for doing far less? Children in High Schools are encouraged to participate in activities once thought of as gender related; Im cetain that those same expectations of equality will follow once they are at work. What a shame that the girls will be sorely dissapointed and find that given opportunities to work in a mans world, they will not recieve the same recogntion and pay as men.
Hi – hope you had a good debate. How did it go and what was the result?
